The Airport's First Fire Truck

by J. Pinsent

Newfoundland Airport's first fire truck, a British-made Merryweather fire truck, arrived late in 1938 valued at $3500. The fire truck was transferred to the RCAF when they assumed control of the airfield, now renamed Gander, in April 1941. Ironically, an airport garage fire in 1942, destroyed the fire truck along with another airport vehicle. Other airport fire/crash vehicles were provided by the RCAF and USAAF for the duration of the war.
