Seaboard & Western Airlines Accident

news

We recently received some photos from a Ms. Dawn Kelly in Ontario whose father had taken, of an aircraft accident while working in Gander in 1954-55. Her father, Mr. Ted Kelly, worked for Pentagon Construction who were contracted by the military to build/install the radar equipment at the RCAF base.

We have made inquires just what had happened to the DC4 but were unable to get any information. The aircraft slid off the runway after landing on R04 on Nov 22, 1955. It is quite likely that the airplane was repaired and flown out some time later. Aircraft maintenance at Gander was very skilled. During this time period, such accidents where considered as minor and didn't warrant much investigation. Probably the reason for the lack of recorded information.

The slide show will show the famous Paul Bunyan crane in action, something that was a rarity. Also note that a second crane was also used to assist.
